Hello Hello! We’re very excited to introduce our Premier Feature in the relaunching of Model Eats Manhattan. The vision of this series combines classic food blogging with an intimate behind-the-scenes glimpse of restaurant life and culinary choice. Our team, Sophie, Seraphina Anna & Abby, look forward to sharing their meals with you, as well as the unique stories they find behind each kitchen door.
Although Taste Collection is currently a lifestyle boutique and photo studio, we are in the process of expanding into a restaurant as well! In preparation, we’ve begun partnering with our neighborhood venues to co-create positive content for the community we are about to enter!
Our premier feature took place last week at Ugly Kitchen, a Filipino and Asian Fusion restaurant in the Lower East Side! As listed on their website: An East Village gastropub specializing in Asian fusion and Filipino cuisine, The Ugly Kitchen is your neighborhood spot for drinks with friends, and a menu that will keep you coming back for more. With a party up front and business in the back attitude, our bar boasts everyday happy hour until 9pm and our perfectly cooked, mouthwatering food is served to groups of friends relaxing in our dining area. Sizzling platters leaving the kitchen are sure to ignite your senses and inspire jealously in neighboring tables, while our bar menu featuring pork buns and fried spring rolls is the perfect accompaniment to our fresh peach cucumber martini or notorious Weng Weng, a Filipino version of a Long Island Iced Tea. On Monday and Tuesday nights, our chef serves up a special Kamayan dinner with stacks of fresh seafood served on banana leaves – just make sure to wash your hands after this utensil-less meal. Friday and Saturday nights, we like to turn up the volume with our live DJ and full bar until 2 a.m. Ugly Kitchen also loves to help out our friends with fundraisers, parties and private events so feel free to contact us to host your next unforgettable affair!
Our team had the lucky opportunity to visit the restaurant before official open hours, sit for a six course meal and speak personally to the Head Chef and Owner, Aris Tuazon. In order of appearance, our incredible meal was delivered as such…
1rst course: Crab Torta Omelette
2nd course: Aligue Rice with Crab
3rd course: Sweet and Sour Baked Salmon
4th course: Salpicao Beef Bone Marrow
5th course: Shrimp Scampi Pasta
6th course: Grilled Lamb Chop Adobo with Chimichurri Sauce
& Calamansi Mimosas ( Calamansi is a fruit that is like a lemon or a lime in the Philippines)
Ugly Kitchen is located at 103 1rst Avenue, New York NY and is also available for catered events. This incredible restaurant has been around since July, 2012 in the same location throughout. Although the ownership has remained the same, the menu is constantly changing and perfecting plates. Aris was very happy to express that he believes that Filipino food and culture is finally being widely embraced and recognized by non-filipinos both here in NY as well as all over the world.
We asked what the craziest thing Ugly’s menu had to offer and Aris’ sly reply was, “Duck embryo! Want to try!?”
