Rise of Medusa
Artist Goldie Poblador’s glass creations in her Rise of Medusa series respond to the aftermath of the devastating 2023 oil spill the Philippines’ Verde Island Passage, one of the most biodiverse marine habitats on the planet.
Rather than treating living forms as separate or isolated entities, Poblador’s work imagines a world in which species, bodies, environments, and sensory experiences are deeply interconnected. Her glass sculptures unfold through an immersive combination of form, scent, luminescence, and sound, creating a speculative habitat shaped by resilience and interspecies survival.
At the center of this imagined ecosystem is the Monstrous Feminine, drawn from Filipino mythology. In Poblador’s hands, Medusa becomes a powerful hybrid figure, grafting herself onto endangered invertebrates as a means of confronting toxicity, environmental destruction, and extractive violence.
Her work challenges the systems and technologies that seek to categorize, control, and order the natural world. Instead, Poblador proposes something more fluid and regenerative: a wondrous disorder where species merge, adapt, and evolve together.
The resulting glass forms are at once fragile and formidable, beautiful and unsettling. They invite us to imagine not simply what has been lost, but what might emerge from ecological devastation: new forms of connection, survival, and transformation.
